Arlington

21Jan11

Yesterday was the 50th anniversary of John F. Kennedy’s inauguration. Kennedy is of course buried at Arlington National Cemetery, and a few weeks ago I went out there with a couple of friends.

It was a beautiful day, and it’s a beautiful cemetery – apparently the second most populated in the United States. The rules governing who can be buried there areĀ complicated, but I guess they need some way of conserving space.

The beauty was seriously marred by the sight that greeted us when we were walking back to the Metro.

The Westboro Baptist Church, a group of some of the most despicable people on the face of the earth, were standing in a special fenced-off “protest area” being, well, despicable. Thankfully I don’t think there was an internment at Arlington that day – imagine going to bury your son and daughter and being confronted with that? – but it was still awful, not the least because they were ruining Lady Gaga with their take on “Poker Face.” I’m not going to link to the lyrics on their website, but it’s probably enough to say that the version included the line “Yeah, you just got your whorish face/(Show your filth to everybody)”.

Huge high five to the students who had come out to do a counter-protest – doesn’t seem like I got a photo of their awesomeness, but it was great to see.
